We eventually reached land again, after roughly seven months of sailing across oceans to get to Ivalice. Riboflavin was loosely docked and everyone in the crew said their farewells; they wouldn't be back for another eleven months.
The first thing I noticed after the ship set its sails away was the sky. We were in Balfonheim now-a city of pirates, the sea always heard from no matter where you stood in town, and the seagulls too friendly to make friends with. Evening set in fast from the time we spotted the land to the docking. It was a new world-Ivalice-our hard-earned berries were of no use in this land. The currency was measured in gold, which I can't violently self-harvest.
A friendly man named Hawker lent us a hand in finding our way to an opportunity, or as most people call it, a job. He walked us through the town to a large building called an Aerodome, pointed us in the direction of good management, and went on his way with a firm handshake to both of us. We turned our backs when he did and were forced to stare our way up the colossal architecture. An Aerodome must have been a place of much commute, and an even better place to find work.
When we walked inside, some lizard guy almost knocked me over backwards. He hardly apologized because he was in a hurry. That, or maybe it's because he's a pirate. I dismissed it easily and followed Kelli through to the counters. A woman named Okelu greeted us. She asked if we would be taking the Balfonheim skyferry by leisure or private cabin. We hadn't a clue what she meant by this.
Once we told her what it was we sook, she led us to her Manager; the Docer. Her name was Pae, and she wasn't so stiff as Okelu. She informed us that she would definitely give us work as she needed the positions filled due to many reasons. Her last greeters left to travel about on select Humes' personal aircrafts, tending to their subtleties. She led us to where we would spend our day making people feel more significant than ourselves. I had the urge to ask what was so terrible about being a Greeter, but this was no time to be picky. We were to start work in two days.
Kelli and I left with much to do: Finding a job held first place, which we cleared rather hastily; Second was to find suitable shelter to reside in for the time being; Third, to get ourselves a nice stock of necessities; and Fourth, to obtain a map of the lands beyond Balfonheim for later curiosities. These would lead us to meet a few pirates which we could take home with us when the ship returned back here in a year. Eventually these streets would become too common for us to trod on and we would strive to create new paths. Our purpose here is simply to recruit and gain knowledge of the land.
While briefly touring the city with Hawker, Kelli kept notes on the paths we did not go down. One of which was a northward turn from the Aerodome into a tight alleyway. We headed that way, noticing immediately that it was a bazaar, though the merchants were tying things up and packing for the night. They walked the path against ours and I then knew that we were on our way to leaving town. This was okay by Kelli, for perhaps we would go hunt our next few meals and get a feel for the terrain of Balfonheim's outskirts.
